Helsinki, 23 February, 2006 — Researchers at the University of California have found that liquorice prevents tooth decay. The researchers hope that the chemicals found in liquorice root, that is used to make liquorice, could be used in dental products.

In Finland, researchers have arrived at similar results. According to docent Eva Söderling of the Institute of Dentistry, University of Turku, in Finland, the sugar in liquorice extract cancels the beneficial effects, however, but using the ingredients of liquorice in dental products would be sensible.
