What do you get when half a dozen top mathematicians join forces with a world-class shot putter? An Olympic gold medal, if you're lucky.

As the largest technology cluster in the Nordic countries, the Otaniemi area is the home to an array of cross-disciplinary projects and initiatives that combine diverse areas of research in novel, sometimes surprising ways.

In addition to being Finland's leading centre of high-technology research, the Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) has conducted numerous projects that blur the boundaries between the traditionally separate fields of scientific and athletic endeavour. These initiatives were realized in cooperation with Finland's Research Institute for Olympic Sports (KIHU).
