Better Use of ICT Vital for the Success of European Tourism SMEs

Helsinki, 24 March, 2006 — “Tourism products are confidence goods, where the available information is customers’ only means of evaluation before consumption”, pointed out Permanent Secretary Erkki Virtanen of Finland’s Ministry of Trade and Industry on March 21 at the press conference of the European Tourism Minister’s Conference.  Finland was responsible for the organisation of a workshop on the use of information and communications technologies in tourism as well as for pioneering projects’ presentations about ICT and tourism.

Outcomes of the workshopEuropean tourism SMEs and destinations need to make better use of ICT, create well-defined business models and strategies, and apply distinctive ICT tools and services in order to remain competitive.
