Helsinki, 19 December, 2003 — How will Finland succeed in the future?

"Finlandís success has for long been based on know-how and its utilisation. Changes in world economy and the acceleration of knowledge-based growth place new challenges for Finnish technology and innovation policy. Where do we find the means to retain our national competitiveness, so that we will be able to succeed in the future, too, and maintain the prerequisites for a welfare society?", observes Director General Timo Kekkonen from the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

According to him Finlandís economic growth has already for long been rooted in know-how and its versatile application. High-level basic education, a strong knowledge base and an efficient innovation environment have allowed both the rapid growth of new sectors and continuous improvement of the international competitiveness of conventional industry.
