GPRS Technology Gains New Ground

the eFinland Weblog

Helsinki, 15 February, 2006 — Enermet and Elisa have developed in cooperation a mobile data solution suitable for automatic meter reading (AMR). The solution allows cost-efficient transfer of energy metering data over the GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) network throughout Finland.

Together with Enermet’s AMR system and integrated GPRS meters, Elisa’s mobile data services provide a flexible, cost-efficient meter reading solution for household sites as well as commercial and industrial sites. In addition to collecting metering data, the two-way AMR system enables various control options and gathers information related to, e.g., electricity quality and network monitoring.

“GPRS data transfer complements well Enermet’s selection of communication options. GPRS provides a secure on-line connection between the meter and the meter reading system: the metering site can always be reached without separately installing a connection,” says Antti Aumo, Enermet’s VP of Marketing, Product Management and Development.

“At Elisa, we want to help our customers to enhance their productivity through communication services tailored for the company's operative processes. Enermet’s meter reading service is an excellent example. We believe that together with Enermet, we can provide value for both energy companies and their customers,” says Anssi Okkonen, Elisa’s Selection Manager in the Business Customers Unit.

Enermet was the first supplier of AMR systems to adopt GPRS communication as a tool for reading household energy meter data in Denmark in late 2004 and in Sweden in 2005. Enermet has actively sought a partner to offer a similar solution also in Finland. The new solution tailored in cooperation with Elisa enables easy implementation of GPRS technology in energy companies’ automatic meter reading.

Mobile data services can be thought of as a wireless extension of the Internet, allowing fast and reliable data transfer. The data connection can be set up and protected using common TCP/IP based tools. The end result is a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) dedicated to meter reading, in which disturbances and data security risks have been minimized.

“Our GPRS solution is already being implemented at, e.g., Savon Voima and Järvi-Suomen Energia. Energy companies can easily acquire the mobile data service either from Enermet or directly from the operator," says Aumo.
